Along classic Route 66 lies Cadillac Ranch, an art installation in which old Cadillacs are half-buried into the ground. People on road trips from all over stop in Amarillo, Texas to spray paint on the cars and add their signature. I woke up feeling great, driving through New Mexico and allowing my thoughts to drift to all the people in my life that make it so incredible gave me a boost of energy for the day. It was a drive day for us, sure we wanted to see Cadillac Ranch, but what we really wanted was a good night’s rest. Apparently, Grant had something else in mind..
We got to Cadillac Ranch around sunset, spray paint in tow and, of course, my hoop. I intended to take LED hoop photos, so as the last few people did their “art” on the cars and left, Grant set the tripod up (presumably for my hoop shots) and we waited for the sun to set a bit more. It was kind of trashed all around the cars, people just threw their spray paint cans on the ground and there was a giant mud puddle surrounding all but two of them. Despite this, we figured it’d be worth it to shoot since it is so iconic. Grant began to spray paint something, I saw it was the outline of a heart. I figured we’d just write GM + MJ and go on our way, but he told me it was a surprise and not to look. I bid my time by watching a storm approach in the horizon, and waited for him to call me over. He came to get me, led me with my eyes closed, (all the while I was thinking, he’s just going to write something stupid to joke with me)..I was wrong. I opened them, read “Marry Me?” and after a second to ask “are you serious?!” I bawled immediately.
I turned around to find him on one knee, ring in hand, and it was the most surreal moment of my life. I had to consciously tell myself to remember it, pay attention, take a picture of him in my mind. We were getting engaged! After what felt like three seconds went by (but was probably 5 minutes), we were embracing and enjoying the moment, and he let me know he had been filming us. I thought that was adorable and was thankful to be able to replay that moment over again. I was absolutely shocked and not expecting it, especially at such a random place like Cadillac Ranch. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
(A beautiful picture of me after having cried my eyes out.)
